Learn how to translate photos into gestural paintings that capture the memory of the moment better than a photograph. Painter, Fullbright fellow and world traveler, Missy Dunaway, will walk you through her process of painting with acrylic inks in Moleskine journals. In this class, she uses an impressionistic approach to create a daylight landscape, adding shadowy details for interest. You’ll learn how to create your very own original painting in layers, mixing color on the page and using evocative brushwork to bring the painting to life.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Source photograph with areas of contrast
  • Moleskin Sketchbook "Classic" - large size (do not use a watercolor sketchbook)
  • Acrylic ink in a variety of colors; Missy uses F&W brand in the following colors: Indigo, Rowney Blue, Process Cyan, Turquoise, Crimson, Flame Red, Scarlet, Process Magenta, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow, Sap Green, Dark Green, Burnt Umber, Two whites
  • Kolinsky Sable Round Brushes (Winsor & Newton or Raphael brand) or synthetic equivalent in sizes 2 - 10
  • Cotton rag
  • Two jars water
  • Nib pen with globe nib (optional)
Learn how to:
  • Work with acrylic ink out of the jar
  • Break down compositions into masses of color
  • Paint a daytime landscape with shadowy aspects
  • Work in layers, painting lights on top of darks
  • Apply Impressionistic color theory
  • Mix ink on the page
  • Work quickly, letting go of perfection and working with mistakes

She is so talented. I would have liked more info about color and brush size choices. I also wondered about contamination of ink since she just dips and blends her ink.

Good pacing of videos. I enjoyed watching her paint in real time and how she shared her thinking while painting.
