Salt dough ornaments have a rustic elegance and can easily be made with common kitchen ingredients. Courtney Cerruti teaches you her favorite recipe for this perfect holiday home activity. These simple "cookie" ornaments can be hung on the tree, strung together with greens for a mantle display, used on a wreath or placed atop a package. Leave them plain for a homespun look, or decorate with paint for a customized palette.

Salt Dough Ornaments
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Salt Dough Recipe: 2 cups flour plus extra for dusting, 1 cup fine salt, 1/2- 3/4 warm water - for tan dough add 3 tbsp cinnamon
  • Parchment paper
  • Skewer or tooth pick 
  • Sharp knife
  • Rolling pin
  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheets
  • Spatula
  • Templates cut onto cardstock and/or cookie cutters
  • Oven set to 200 Fahrenheit 
  • For decorating: watercolor or acrylic paint, paint brushes, jar of water
  • Chop sticks (optional) 
  • Wire cutter and paper clips to create a hanging loop (optional)
