The soft light of a candle has a way of setting up an idyllic atmosphere for celebration or contemplation. That feeling is even more profound when the glow of that candle is one you have made yourself. This class covers three variations of small, handmade beeswax candles. Cobrina of Creativebug demonstrates how to roll celebration candles from sheet beeswax, some best for sticking in a cupcake and others for a candleholder, such as a menorah. Next, learn how to melt beeswax and dip small double-sided tapers layered with colors from a crayon. If you choose to make both candle types, you can then use the leftovers to make a votive.
Here’s what you’ll need:
For rolled candles:
  • Sheet beeswax (one 8" x 8" sheet makes about fifteen 2.5" candles)
  • Waxed hemp wick
  • Cutting mat, craft knife, and ruler
  • Book or some kind of edge to assist with rolling
  • Scissors
  • Optional: heat gun / hair dryer

For dipped candles:
  • 0.5 - 1 lb. beeswax blocks or pellets
  • Tin can - taller than the desired height of your candles
  • Burner or heat source
  • Small saucepan half full of water
  • Wooden chopstick for stirring
  • Waxed hemp wick
  • Cup or jar filled with cold water
  • Wax paper or parchment to protect surfaces
  • Two wine bottles with length of string (40") to hold dipped candle pairs
  • Optional: crayons

For poured candle:
  • Small mason jar
  • Waxed hemp wick
  • Leftover melted beeswax
  • Small scraps of sheet beeswax
  • Small cookie cutter
  • Wooden chopstick
