Explore the versatility of masking fluid with watercolor artist Yao Cheng. Yao demonstrates a number of ways you can use resist techniques with watercolor, including abstract and representational patterns using brushes and a pen nib. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Watercolor paints
- Watercolor palette
- Paper towels
- Block of Arches 140lb watercolor paper
- 2 containers water
- 4 to 5 Inexpensive brushes (Yao uses Blick Scholastic Script brushes in sizes 2 and 4)
- Basic pen nib
- Larger watercolor brushes (Yao uses a mop brush and size 14 and 24 round tips)
- Masking fluid (Yao uses Winsor & Newton)
- Drawing gum to use with nib (Yao uses Pebeo)
- Small plastic container with lid
- Rubber pickup to use with masking fluid
- Separate water jar filled with soapy water
- Pencil and eraser

Interesting way to obtain geometric and transitional shapes. Blending traditional watercolor techniques with the abstracted shapes added with resist create a whole new dimension to what you can do with watercolor.
