Taught by Flora Bowley
Your journey begins by creating an inspiration archive. Take a walk with Flora to gather real-world imagery that you will translate into motifs. Flora shares her process along the way, discussing what inspires her to take a photo when she’s out walking, and how she draws from those images to create color palettes, shapes and compositions once she’s back in the studio. The studies that you will create on card stock will be used in the following classes to create your paintings.
Learn how to:
  • See shapes, color and texture in the natural world
  • Find inspiration online and in magazines
  • Translate photos into motifs that you will use in paintings

    Part 1:
Intuitive Painting: Gathering Inspiration and Creating Imagery
    Flora Bowley
Your journey begins by creating an inspiration archive. Take a walk with Flora to gather real-world imagery that you will translate into motifs. Flora shares her process along the way, discussing what inspires her to take a photo when she’s out walking, and how she draws from those images to create color palettes, shapes and compositions once she’s back in the studio. The studies that you will create on card stock will be used in the following classes to create your paintings.
    Part 2:
    Intuitive Painting: Mark Making
    Flora Bowley
Learn how Flora uses traditional brushes, non-traditional tools and even fingers to build a vocabulary of marks in her paintings. Flora demonstrates techniques you can use to produce a range of expressive markings, from bold to delicate. This class is all about exploring how paint and movement work together to create a language all its own.
    Part 3:
    Intuitive Painting: Creating Your Masterpiece
    Flora Bowley
Working on two canvases simultaneously, learn how Flora builds layers to create two finished paintings. You’ll pull from the imagery you created in Part 1 and the marks you created in Part 2, strengthening your creative intuition and learning how to respond to previous layers as you build your painting. As you hone in on the final layer, Flora demonstrates how to preserve moments within a painting and obscure marks to create a cohesive and successful masterpiece.
