Toe-Up Socks in the Round
Crochet a custom-fit pair of one-of-a-kind socks, worked in the round with single crochet stitches. The sock is worked from a recipe-style pattern, requiring either measurements of the wearer's foot or trying it on as you go. Clothing designer, author, and teacher Cal Patch designed this sock with easily replaceable heels and toes, which are the parts that tend to wear out more quickly. Play with different colors on different sections of your socks, and you can even use whatever weight of yarn you want for a thinner or thicker fabric.

Yarn: You can use any weight of yarn to crochet these socks in one color or multiple colors. Cal uses approx. 250 yards total of worsted weight yarn in 3 different colors, which is a good place to start for first-time sock makers. You can also use a sock weight or fingering weight yarn for a thinner sock. High-twist, wool yarn is Cal's favorite.
Crochet Hook: For DK/worsted = E/4 (3.5mm) or F/5 (3.55mm). For fingering/sock = C/2 (2.75mm) or D/3 (3.25mm).
Gauge: You will want to work socks at a slightly tighter/denser gauge than a typical garment like a sweater or hat. This will help the socks fit (and fit in your shoes), wear better and last longer. Rather than giving a specific “stitches per inch” gauge, Cal suggests making a swatch in half double crochet with one of the hook sizes suggested above for the weight of yarn you are using. Aim for the right balance between a too dense and sturdy fabric, and one that is too loose and stretchy.
