Dip your toe into the wild waters of quilting with these two simple potholder projects. Modern quilter Ashley Nickels shows you how to make a basic potholder using solid squares of fabric and pre-made bias tape, or a slightly more complex patchwork potholder using homemade binding tape. You will learn about basting, chain piecing and different styles of quilting, plus pro tips for attaching the binding.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Chalk or marking pencil (optional)
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat with 45-degree angle
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Sewing machine with standard presser foot
  • Walking foot attachment for sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing surface
  • Coordinating thread
  • Basic Potholder:
  • Two 8” squares of fabric
  • One 8 ¼” square of quilting batting
  • One 8 ¼” square of Insul Bright (or other heat proof lining)
  • 42” of double-fold bias tape for binding
  • 9-patch potholder:
  • One 8” square of fabric (for back)
  • Nine 3” squares of fabric (assorted colors, minimum three different colors)
  • One 8 ¼” square of quilting batting
  • One 8 ¼” square of Insul Bright (or other heat proof lining)
  • 2 ¼”-wide strips of fabric for binding, at least 42” long when connected (you’ll need to sew two pieces together on a 45-degree angle; see video for details)
