Aimee Blackledge
I'm a surface pattern designer and printmaker based in the village of Birkdale, on the Sefton Coast. I'm driven by intellectual curiosity and I focus on creating visually engaging designs based on my exposure to a wide visual repertoire. I graduated from the University of Oxford with a Master of Studies and Doctor of Philosophy degree in the History of Art. My research focuses on the collections of art and other material objects owned by artists and how they used them both as part of the creative process and to assemble creative environments within their studios and homes.
My Designs
My style is typically minimalist graphics with an idiosyncratic palette. I focus on creating statement pieces that are bold and contemporary, which reference historically meaningful narratives, myths and identities. I believe that pattern design should be enveloping and whenever possible, tactile. Therefore, I use multidisciplinary methods of making, including printmaking techniques, such as linocut, letterpress and other pre-press methods in order to create unique textures and nonuniform effects.
My design aesthetic embraces cabinets of curiosities and wunderkammers, built environments where objects are arranged to celebrate variety, assemblage, fragments, visual delights, nature, entirety and multiple interpretations. As a result, most of my designs represent notions of macrocosms and microcosms. I love reworking whole complex structures and miniature environments, from atoms to the cosmos, both organic and geometric.
