Crafting with nature is a lovely way to spend time looking at and appreciating the flowers and plants around you. In this class, artist and educator Courtney Cerruti shows you how to make vibrant botanical prints by hammering or "pounding" flowers onto paper. You'll also learn how to shift the color of plant pigments by toning them with acidic or alkaline solutions, as well as fun ways to enhance your prints with watercolor. Using simple materials and a simple technique, you can create beautiful floral art with a hammer and blooms.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Hot press watercolor paper - Courtney is using Strathmore 140lb hot press watercolor paper
  • Several sheets of paper towel for padding
  • Wax paper
  • Hammer
  • Snips
  • Pencil
  • Flowers and botanicals such as coreopsis, marigold, vinca, pansies/violas, cosmos, sweet william, dill
  • Optional for "toning" flowers: watercolor, vinegar, baking soda, several small dishes or jars to create your solutions, three watercolor brushes

Courtney! Thank you for explaining the process so clearly. I love how the adding of water with baking soda changes the colors. Thank you for the tip of adding alum, if we want to pound our flowers on fabric. This has so many possibilities!
