If you can trace an image, you can make a blotted line monoprint. Artist Extraordinaire Courtney Cerruti has spent years incorporating this technique into her art practice and shows you everything she’s learned in this daily practice class series. First made popular by Andy Warhol, this technique utilizes just a few unique materials that create inky outlines that can then be colored in and embellished. In addition to perfecting your monoprinting technique, learn how to make composite images, work on black paper, and paint with metallics. Inkblots and turn-of-the-century ghost signatures round out the month. Whether you color (or paint) in the lines or outside of them, you’ll be inspired by Courtney’s eclectic influences and thoughtful instruction.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Transparency sheet. Courtney has had good results with these:
  • Stainless Steel pointed nib pen - Courtney is using Nikko G, Hunt Globe 513, and Hunt Extra Fine nibs
  • Straight holder
  • Nib pen sets shown: Speedball No. 20 or No. 5 General Purpose
  • F&W Acrylic Ink or other ink -- Courtney is using Payne's Grey, Indigo, Sepia, and White
  • Dinky dips and eye dropper (optional)
  • Medium weight paper (minimum 28#) -- Courtney is using Strathmore drawing paper, Canson Mixed Media paper, Paper Source Flat cards, and Hammermill 28# printer paper
  • Washi or painter's tape
  • Watercolors -- Courtney is using Prima Watercolors in Odyssey and Prima Watercolors in Tropical and Finetec metallic watercolors
  • Paintbrushes – Courtney is using a #5 round brush
  • For Day 11: Acrylic or craft paint – Courtney is using Sennellier 3D liner and Golden high flow acrylic
  • Baby wipes or Windex and paper towels
  • Image references printed from PDF
