Having your artwork and photos professionally framed can be pricey—especially if you have several pieces to frame. In this class, Hilary Williams shows how to professionally mat and frame your artwork at home for a fraction of the price. You will learn how to mount and back artwork of any size and add a dust cover to finish it off. Whether you’re an artist with a collection of pieces that need to be framed, or you simply want to frame your favorite family photos, this class will show you exactly how simple it is to get a professional look at home.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Artwork you’ll be framing (Hilary is framing an 8 ½” x 11” screen print)
  • Two pieces of matboard (Hilary uses 11” x 14” matboards to mat and back her artwork)
  • Frame to fit the size of your matboard
  • Mat cutter (Hilary uses a Logan Compact Mat Cutter; if you’re framing a standard size piece of work, precut mats can be purchased)
  • Ruler
  • Acid-free photo mounting squares
  • Framing hardware (hooks for hanging)
  • Framing wire
  • X-Acto blade or craft knife
  • Pencil

I thought it was great; I only have one question: What do you do if the mat is longer than the cutting apparatus?

Very helpful! I do wish she had talked about selecting mat and frame color, as well as the size of the frame.
